Cold Weather Strategies
Overview
Alpine ski racers use various techniques to stay warm in freezing conditions. They bring extra jackets, use hand warmers, wear heated clothing, apply hand cream, and wear face masks.
Here are some ways to keep warm
Rub hand cream on your feet and toes before putting on your ski socks. Well oiled feet resist the cold better than feet with dry skin.
Place hand warmers on your shins just above your boots to help circulation to your feet. Place the warmers on your base layer.
Heated socks, boots and gloves are effective.
Be sure not to over tighten your ski boots especially the buckles over your feet as this will limit circulation.
When racing in an aerodynamic suit, bring two jackets to the race. Leave one jacket near the finish area for you to put on after your initial run. This will help you avoid getting too cold while riding the chairlift back to the starting point for your second run or when retrieving your jacket and warm-up pants.
Engage in dynamic warm-up routines when waiting your turn to start a race or training run.
Boot Gloves, or a similar product will keep your feet warm and dry on those days you are not training in gates.
Wear a face mask or balaclava.
On very cold days, take a break from training, warm up in the lodge and enjoy a hot beverage.
After the race, change into warm, dry clothing promptly and consume a warm beverage to raise body temperature and prevent post-race chill.
Key Takeaways
The key takeaways regarding staying warm for alpine ski racers in frigid conditions are:
Strategies to Stay Warm: Alpine ski racers employ various strategies such as carrying extra jackets, using hand warmers, wearing heated gear, applying hand cream, and utilizing face masks to combat the cold during races.
Importance of Circulation and Post-Race Warmth: Racers should prioritize circulation, engage in dynamic warm-up routines, and seek warmth in the lodge after racing to prevent frostbite and post-race chill, especially as age can lead to decreased circulation.
